If you are on city water, it is very likely that you will not need a water softner. The number one error I see home owners make is purchasing a large and expensive water softner when a carbon based system would make much more sense. Some manufacturers offer ready to go kits but may have proprietary filter sizes which limit flexibility. Industry standard sized 4" diameter housings are nicknamed "big blue" filters. Manufactures offer a wide range of filter types to meet just about any filter need. You needs will be much different if you are on a well vs. a municipal water system.
